Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners went back and forth with the Schaumburg Boomers on Friday night at Rent One Park, answering three separate run-scoring innings for the visitors with runs of their own, and thwarting a late comeback for a 7-6 victory to run their record to 10-8 on the year.
The Boomers began the scoring with Clint Hardy's two-out RBI single in the first inning against Miners starter Austin Dubsky, but a leadoff error by third baseman Matt Rose in the bottom half ended up costing Boomers starter Gunnar Kines (1-1), as Kyle Davis crushed a two-run home run later in the frame to put Southern Illinois up 2-1. Schaumburg got both runs back and took a 3-2 lead in the third when Quincy Nieporte hit a two-run shot out to left field, but Gianfranco Wawoe answered in kind for the Miners, knocking in Bryant Flete with an RBI single to tie the score at 3-3.
It would not stay tied for long, as Nick Oddo hit the first pitch of the top of the fourth inning by Dubsky (2-1) over the right field fence for a 4-3 Schaumburg lead, but again the Miners responded, and took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Chris Iriart and Arturo Nieto walked and Joe Duncan singled to load the bases with no one out. Cletis Avery then hit a ground ball to third base for a fielder's choice, with Iriart sliding around the tag from Oddo at the plate to tie the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Flete came up with a go-ahead RBI single to put Southern Illinois up 5-4, and after Kines departed, a wild pitch by reliever Joe Dougherty made it 6-4.
Dubsky settled down from there, and worked a season-high six and two-thirds innings while also striking out a season-high seven and walking just one to get the victory on the mound. In the meantime, the Miners would add to their lead in the seventh with what proved to be the winning run on a two-out RBI single by Nieto that made it 7-4.
In the ninth, the Boomers got two men on base to bring the tying run to the plate, and with two outs and Jack Parenty down to his final strike, the Schaumburg outfielder tripled to score both runners and make it 7-6. But Jordan Brink came in and earned the save when he got Rayden Sierra to ground out to end the game.
Flete finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Miners, while Wawoe also enjoyed a multi-hit game by going 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. Eight of the nine Miners starters had at least one hit in the game, with six players scoring a run and five driving in a run as well.
The Miners will now look for a third-straight win as well as the series win on Saturday, June 1, at 6:05 at Rent One Park in game two of the weekend set against the Boomers.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's most-successful franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
