Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners scored three runs in the first and never looked back from there, pounding out ten runs on 13 hits and leading the entire way in a 10-7 victory over the River City Rascals at CarShield Field in O'Fallon on Thursday afternoon, sweeping the two-game series and finishing the regular season with a 5-1 record against River City on the road. They also improved to a season-best 11 games over the .500 mark at 23-12.

After the first two outs were recorded in the first, Craig Massey singled and Alex De Leon hit a fly ball to deep center field that was dropped by Alexi Colon, scoring Massey for a 1-0 Miners lead. Nolan Earley then followed with a double to drive home De Leon, and two batters later, Vin Guglietti smacked a double of his own to right field for a 3-0 Miners lead.

River City would get two of those runs back on single by Josh Ludy in the first off Josh Kimborowicz, but the Miners held the lead. In the third, Guglietti would hit his second homer in as many nights, a solo shot over the high right field wall, for a 4-2 Miners lead, and Southern Illinois would tack on two more runs in the fourth inning on a Massey RBI single and a De Leon RBI double to take a 6-2 advantage. River City would again respond with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, both unearned off of Kimborowicz (5-0) due to a pair of errors in the frame.

The score remained 6-4 Miners through the middle innings until the eighth, when Kennedy launched his second homer of the season to left-center off reliever Reese Gregory to make it 8-4. After River City again scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-6, the Miners would score a pair of runs yet again in the ninth on back-to-back solo home runs by Earley and Steve Marino. The Rascals would plate a run in the ninth for the final 10-7 margin in the high-powered offensive contest.

Five Miners (Kennedy, Earley, De Leon, Guglietti and Francisco Rosario) each finished with two hits in the game, with Guglietti, Earley and Kennedy finishing with two RBIs apiece. With 13 hits in the contest and four more homers, that brought their total to 29 hits and eight home runs over the two games in O'Fallon.

The Miners will next return home beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Evansville Otters, who they lead by 1.5 games atop the West Division standings. Rick Teasley will take the mound in the series opener.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the back-to-back Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
