Augusta, NJ - The Sussex County Miners (42-19) ran their win streak to seven games, matching a franchise high, by sweeping a Sunday afternoon doubleheader from the New Jersey Jackals (29-31) by scores of 8-3 and 5-2 at Skylands Stadium. In the process, the Miners swept a five-game series for the first time in franchise history.
After a scoreless first inning to start game one, the Jackals scored first in the second as a Kevin Torres two-run Single gave New Jersey the 2-0 lead. The Miners responded right back as Jayce Ray scored Audy Ciriaco to cut the lead in half. Later in the inning, Ray scored off a wild pitch to tie the game at two.
The Miners blew the game open in the third inning, as the team scored six runs in an inning for the second time this series and the third time this season. Mikey Reynolds lined a double right inside the third base foul line to give the Miners a 4-2 lead. After Daniel Mateo scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-2, Ray sent Reynolds home with a sacrifice fly that made the lead four runs, 6-2. Audy Ciriaco scored on another wild pitch to make the lead 7-2. The play of the day occurred when Christian Correa sent a sacrifice fly to deep center field that scored Connor Crane from second base to increase the lead to 8-2. Jackals starter Mariel Checo (2-3) allowed all 8 runs with 7 runs earned with four walks and three strikeouts.
The only other run in the game would be a Jordan Hinshaw RBI single to add a run to the Jackals total, but it wouldn't be enough. The eight run outburst in two innings would be all the Miners needed to take game one of the doubleheader 8-3.
Miners starter Mark McCoy (3-2) had a strong outing, throwing five innings allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Martire Garcia finished the final two innings with no hits allowed en route to a dominant bullpen performance.
The Miners stayed locked in during game two as they completed the rare five game sweep of the Jackals. After a quiet two and a half innings the Miners got off and running in the top of the third. Jarred Mederos and Breland Almadova worked back-to-back walks to set things up for Connor Crane. Mederos was caught stealing before a Crane ground ball pushed Almadova over to third. The eighth pitch of Martin Figueroa's at-bat got away from Jackals' pitcher Yasmani Hernandez and allowed Almadova to swipe home on the wild pitch to give Sussex County the 1-0 lead.
The Miners bats would then erupt in the bottom of the fourth inning. Danny Mateo continued to stay hot this series with a base hit to begin the frame. Mikey Reynolds then walked to place runners on first and second for Audy Ciriaco who laced a ball into the gap for a two run double. He would then come around to score on a Jayce Ray single, to extend the lead. The fourth run of the inning was manufactured via some strategic baserunning tactics as Mederos took off from second to draw the throw with a runner on third; Mederos was caught but Ray took advantage and was credited with a steal of home to put the Miners up 5-0.
New Jersey, after a fifth inning weather delay, would eventually push a couple of runs across in the top of the seventh inning. Seth Spivey hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Jackals on the board, and David Harris looped a single into left to bring the game to 5-2 before Green was retired to end the game.
Cory Jones (7-2) went the distance in the seven inning game to earn the win. He allowed two unearned runs while scattering six hits, walking two and striking out four in the complete game effort. Hernandez (3-4) took the loss for New Jersey, going five innings while surrendering all five Miners runs (four earned), on five hits and four walks; he struck out just one.
The Miners will travel to Rockland, just one stolen base away from tying the Can-Am record for swiped bags in a single season. Game one of that series will be played Monday at 6:30pm.
