
Miners sweep doubleheader from Flyers

MESA, ARIZONA âThe Mesa Miners took both games of the doubleheader form the Fullerton Flyers at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Miners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a RBI single by Marcus Jensen and a 2-run home run by Michael Done, his second of the season. The Flyers scored a run in the third with a RBI single by Garry Templeton II, which would eventually be their only run of the game. The Miners added a run in the fourth inning and put the game away by scoring five times in the fifth to make it 9-1. Adam Bonner and Marcus Knight both had 2-run doubles in the fifth inning.
Mesa starter Tim Kalita (2-0) won his second game of the season by pitching six strong innings giving up one run on six hits. Fullerton starter Craig Green (0-1) lost the game in his first start of the year.
In the second game, the Miners scored first again in the third inning by a wild pitch and an error for a 2-0 lead. A solo home run by Marcus Knight, his third of the year, made it 3-0 in the fourth inning. Mesa added some insurance runs in the sixth with a RBI single by Digz Edwards and a wild pitch to make it 5-0, which would be the final score.
Mesa starter Grant Williams (2-1) won his second game of the season by pitching six shutout innings. Kelly Johnson closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning. Losing pitcher for the Flyers was Joe Rogers (0-2).
The final game of the four-game series concludes tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Chris Marini for Mesa and Josh Stevens for Fullerton are the scheduled starters.
