Miners lose to Fullerton 9-6

MESA, ARIZONA –The Mesa Miners opened their longest homestand of the season with a loss to the Fullerton Flyers 9-6 at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona.

The Miners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with a 2-run single by Michael Done and a sacrifice fly by Adam Bonner. The Flyers came back with a three-run inning of their own in the second to tie the game with RBI singles by Scooter Jordan and Sean Walsh and a RBI double by pitcher Ben Fox.

Fullerton went on to score one more in the third, two in the fourth, and three in the sixth. Leadoff hitter Jordan finished the game 4-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Walsh continued his hot hitting, also going 4-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI. In all, the Flyers banged out 16 hits.

Mesa was led by their leadoff hitter Digz Edwards who went 5-for-5 with 2 runs scored and a RBI. The team collected 6 runs on 8 hits with 4 errors. Starting pitcher for the Flyers, Ben Fox (3-0), won his third game of the season by pitching 5.1 innings. Cameron Flading picked up his second save of the year. Losing pitcher for the Miners was starter Jason Navarro (0-2) who lasted only 3.1 innings, giving up 6 runs (4 earned).

Games 2 and 3 of the four-game series continues tomorrow with the doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m. Scheduled starters for Mesa are Tim Kalita (1-0) and Grant Williams (1-1) and for Fullerton TBA.
