Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners split a doubleheader with the Florence Freedom on Wednesday morning at UC Health Stadium, continuing a recent offensive surge with a 13-3 win in Game 1 before a seventh-inning rally in Game 2 fell just short in a 5-3 defeat.

In the first game, the Miners picked up right where they left off the previous night, as after Shane Kennedy singled with one out, Vin Guglietti crushed a two-run homer for a quick 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, Steve Marino smacked an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0. After Florence got a run in the bottom half of the inning against Jarett Miller, a huge two-out rally in the second netted the Miners five runs. Kennedy doubled to drive home Toby DeMello to start the scoring, while Guglietti and Alex De Leon reached on a hit-by-pitch and a walk to load the bases. Nolan Earley then reached on an infield hit to score another run to make it 5-1, while Marino walked to force in a sixth run.

Southern Illinois was not done, as Julius Gaines followed Marino with a two-run single to right to make the score 8-1, and with two aboard in the following inning, De Leon crushed a three-run homer to right-center, extending the advantage to 11-1 after three innings. Florence was able to scratch across single runs in the fourth and fifth, but the Miners got both back in the sixth when both De Leon and Marino went yard with solo homers (De Leon's second of the game and Marino's team-best ninth of the season) for the final margin. Miller (3-2) went the distance, allowing two earned runs while walking two and striking out three to earn the victory.

In the second game, Gaines would drive home a run in the second inning with a fielder's choice that gave the Miners a 1-0 lead, and that would stand up until the bottom of the fourth inning, when back-to-back solo homers by Andrew Godbold and Collins Cuthrell gave Florence the lead at 2-1. The Freedom would score three more times against the Miners' bullpen in the next two innings for a 5-1 lead before Southern Illinois rallied in the seventh off Ethan Gibbons. Riley Moore andBrendan O'Brien singled and with two outs, Kennedy drove both home with a double to make it 5-3 and bring the tying run to the plate. But Guglietti flew out to center field to end the game.

The Miners will go for the series victory in the fourth and final game of the week in Florence on Thursday night at 6:05 p.m., with Rick Teasley getting the start for the Miners against Florence's Cody Gray.
