Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners dropped their third game in a row on Friday night at Wintrust Field against the Schaumburg Boomers, suffering a 4-0 shutout loss in the series opener.
The Miners were able to get runners on base against Boomers starter Andrew Dean (2-3) early, as with one out in the second inning, Gianfranco Wawoe walked and Ian Walters doubled to left to put runners at second and third base. But Dean struck out the next two batters to get out of trouble.
In the following inning, a infield hit by Yeltsin Gudino and an error allowing him to be safe at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Luke Mangieri put two more runners on for the Miners, but they were unable to plate any runs in the inning. In the bottom of the third, Schaumburg then broke through as Clint Hardy worked a leadoff walk against Gunnar Kines (0-2), stole second base, moved to third on a ground ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alberto Schmidt to make it 1-0.
Back-to-back hit batters in the fourth also cost Kines and the Miners, as Chase Dawson followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 advantage, and two batters later, Nick Ames floated a double just fair inside the left field line to extend Schaumburg's lead to 4-0.
The Southern Illinois bullpen held the line there, with Stevie Ledesma, Alec Thomas, Mitchell Walters, and Ryan Miller combining to throw four and two-thirds scoreless innings and retiring 11 Boomers in a row at one point, but the offense could not find any runs late as the Miners were shut out.
Southern Illinois will look to even the series behind Trent Johnson on Saturday, July 3, at 6:00 p.m., with Orlando Rodriguez drawing the starting assignment for Schaumburg on the mound.
