Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners were shut out 7-0 by the Gateway Grizzlies on Wednesday night at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, with Vince Molesky (5-8) going the distance for the home team to hand the Miners the series-evening defeat.
Kyle Tinius got the start in the game for the Miners, and he held the Grizzlies scoreless through the first three innings on a pair of hits, striking out two in the game. Molesky also held the Miners off the board in that span, allowing just three baserunners to reach in the first six innings, with two hits and one batter reaching on an error.
In the bottom of the sixth after a double and a groundout gave Gateway a runner at third with one out against Jarett Miller, Josh Bunselmeyer hit a two-run homer over the short porch in right field to give the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead. With two outs that same inning against Miller (8-4), a hit-by-pitch and two singles loaded the bases before Ben Waldrip hit a two-run double down the left field line to double the deficit to 4-0.
Gateway would get their final runs in the eighth on a three-run shot with two outs by Waldrip, also over the short fence in right field. The Miners got a pair of hits in the ninth against Molesky, but could not manage a run in suffering the loss, evening the series at one game apiece. Miller pitched the final five innings, striking out seven while walking only one, but also allowing all seven Gateway runs in the contest.
The Miners will look to bounce back in the rubber match on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., with Rick Teasley on the mound for the Miners against Gateway southpaw Jon Jones in the final regular season road contest for the Miners in 2016.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
