Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Marion, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners clubbed 17 hits and five homers on Thursday night at GCS Ballpark in Sauget to rip the Gateway Grizzlies 13-1, taking the series two games to one.

The Miners jumped ahead almost immediately, with back-to-back doubles by Aaron Gates and Shane Kennedy leading off the ballgame giving them a 1-0. Two batters later, Alex De Leon drove Kennedy home with an RBI single to make it 2-0, and after Nolan Earley was hit by a pitch, Steve Marino blasted a three-run home run to left-center, with his second long ball of the series making it 5-0 in the first inning.

The Miners' offense would not let up against Jon Jones (4-4) and reliever Chris Rogers, as Kennedy slammed a solo home run over the center field wall in the second that made it 6-0 and De Leon unleashed a moonshot to left field in the third inning for another solo homer and a 7-0 lead. In the fourth, Southern Illinois would score three more times after Gateway got a single run back against Rick Teasley in the bottom of the third, with Toby DeMello hitting an opposite-field homer to right to make it 8-1, and RBI singles later in the inning by Kennedy and Marino extending the lead to 10-1.

Meanwhile, Teasley (8-5) tossed five innings and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out five in the game to earn the victory, with his 28th win as a Miner pulling him into a tie with Ryan Bird for the most in a career in team history. The Miners' offense added more runs in the late innings, as Earley doubled home two runs for a 12-1 lead and Gates smacked yet another homer (his second of the series and eighth career long ball at GCS Ballpark) to complete the scoring.

Kennedy and Marino both finished with four hits and both were a triple away from the cycle, with Kennedy going 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBIs and Marino going 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the game. Gates added a 3-for-5 performance with three runs scored and De Leon chipped in by going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. The Miners tied their season-high with 17 total hits, with their five homers tying a team record for most in a single game and their 11 total extra-base hits setting a new team benchmark for a single contest.

The Miners will return home to play their final regular season series against the River City Rascals beginning on Friday night at 7:05 p.m., with Dyllon Nuernberg pitching against former Miners right-hander Joe Pavlovich.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2016 Frontier League West Division Champions, the 2014 and 2015 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
