Sussex County starting pitcher Jeff Thompson and reliever Jose Jose combined on a nine-hit shutout as the Miners downed New Jersey, 5-0. The victory by the Miners was their fifth straight.
Thompson tossed the first eight innings of the contest and gave up a pair of walks and seven hits to go along with seven strikeouts. The 27-year-old threw 111 pitches in the outing, with 66 going for strikes. Jose finished the final inning allowing a walk and two hits while fanning two in the six batters he faced. Thompson notched the win and is now 6-0 on the year.
Offensively for Sussex County, 3B/DH Nate Coronado went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while RF Noah Cummings added a hit in three at-bats along with a walk and a run scored.
Second baseman Nelson Ward went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks in the loss for the Jackals.
