Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - For the first time this year the Kane County Cougars (29-32) were shutout in a nine-inning ballgame, as the Milwaukee Milkmen (40-21) took the series finale 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field.

Tyler Viza (3-1) and Ryan Kussmaul (2-0) kept the game scoreless for six innings before the Cougars blinked first and allowed a run on an error.

Milwaukee's David Washington connected on the game's first extra-base hit with a double to leadoff the 7th. Trey Martin bunted him to third, but Viza was one strike away from ending the inning in Aaron Hill's at-bat. On an 0-2 pitch outside, catcher BJ Lopez threw to third base looking to pick off Washington, but the throw sailed into left field. The brought in the game's first run. Hill singled one pitch later, making the run earned.

One run was enough for Milwaukee, but Adam Brett Walker II added to his league-lead with a solo shot off of Kyle Huckaby to begin the 9th.

Kussmaul stifled the Cougars' offense for seven innings. He allowed a two-out single to Mark Karaviotis in the 1st and a leadoff single to Gavin LaValley in the 2nd, but the Cougars couldn't get another hit. Kussmaul retired the final 18 batters he faced.

Zach Hartman continued the dominance with a perfect 8th inning. The last glimmer of offense the Cougars got was Nick Lovullo reaching on an error in 9th inning, but Nate Hadley (8) finished off the game for the save.

After losing their fifth-straight series, the Cougars will enjoy an off day on Monday. After that, the Cougars head to Rosemont for a short three-game series against the Chicago Dogs. Those games can be heard on kccougars.com/listen-live.
