Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo Black Hawks president Doug Miller has been named the winner of the United States Hockey League's Dave Tyler Executive of the Year Award, the USHL announced Wednesday.

Miller, who joined the Hawks as general manager of business operations in 2001, is the first member of the organization to win this honor, which is being conferred for the sixth time. Promoted to the role of president prior to the 2009-2010 season, Miller has continuously helped the Black Hawks grow attendance, build strong relationships with corporate partners, and improve the game night experience in Party Town. In 2011-2012, the Hawks hosted nearly 100,000 fans during the regular season and playoffs and averaged over 85% of Young Arena's seating capacity during the 30-game home slate for the eighth consecutive year.

"This is humbling, considering that each USHL team has people who deserve this honor," said Miller. "I would like to recognize the effort of my entire staff. Hard work and dedication on and off the ice makes what we do here happen."

Away from the rink, Miller and the Black Hawks celebrated 50 years of hockey in the Cedar Valley by looking back on a proud heritage during the 2011-2012 season. A partnership with Waterloo's Grout Museum led to an exhibit covering the entire Hawks' timeline from 1962 to the modern day, allowing the team to reach beyond its typical hockey fanbase to anyone with an interest in their community. Under Miller's leadership, the Hawks also actively supported good causes throughout the Cedar Valley, with players spending nearly 1,200 hours working on service projects, while the organization raised over $50,000 for groups including the Waterloo Youth Hockey Association, Sullivan-Hartogh-Davis Post 730 Honor Flight, Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Cedar Bend Humane Society, Beyond Pink TEAM, and others. Individually, Miller also serves on the Boards of the Waterloo Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Cedar Basin Jazz Festival.

"When someone asks why the Black Hawks are successful, I tell them it is because I have the best people working for me," said Black Hawks owner Butch Johnson. "Doug has set a high standard, and each season he and the Black Hawks organization seem to raise the bar a little further."

The Dave Tyler Executive of the Year Award is determined by a poll of USHL member teams. Dave Tyler was a significant figure in Waterloo prior to his retirement, serving as City Attorney for the community. He was also a Black Hawks and Waterloo Warriors executive, president of the USHL for twelve years, and held several leadership positions within USA Hockey.
