Strong Island Sound News Release

Selden, NY- Miguel 'Slim' Milliems scored 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots to lead the Strong Island Sound to a 90-87 victory over the Newark Express at Suffolk Community College on Youth Services Night in front of a season-high crowd. It was the team's first home game since January 6th after a long 2-4-road trip.

"Miguel gave us what we needed tonight," said Sound head coach Dytanya Mixson. "With Shawn Simpson leaving, he can make up the difference."

Milliem, who returned to the team after a short stint in the CBA earlier in the season, ignited the crowd with a number of eye-popping plays, including two slams off alley-oop passes.

"Good coaching," Milliem said. "Coach Mixson worked with me during the summer and just told me to go out and play my game."

The Sound (14-11) started the game off tentatively and shot only 25 percent from the field in the first quarter. The Express led after one, 23-16. Raphael Edwards (14 points, 8 rebounds) led Strong Island in a positive second quarter, where they outscored Newark by 9 points and went into the halftime break leading 42-40. Edwards had 12 points and 4 boards at that point.

Brian Woodward, who led the Sound with 18 points, came alive in the second half and was hustling on both ends of the court. The 6'3" guard out of the University of Rhode Island also had 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. His put-back near the end of the third quarter put the Sound up by a score of 64-59.

The Sound led by 13 points after Woodward made a steal and fed Tommie 'Gunzz' Eddie on a long pass for a slam with 6:27 left in the game. Newark head coach Marsha Blount called a time-out and her squad came out rejuvenated. Reggie Winkfield hit consecutive three-point field goals to cut it to 83-78. Greg Plummer (14 points) answered with his own three to make it an 8-point game with 2:10 left. The Express (2-17) got as close as four, but had to keep fouling as the clock wound down and Strong Island came away with a 90-87 win.

Sound co-owner Darren Cioffi commented on the 750 fans that came out on Youth Services Night, "This was a great night. To have them out here, they (recipients of the 500 donated tickets to the Suffolk County Youth Services Bureau) had a good time. We're finally reaching out to Long Island."

Lou Medina, head of the Suffolk County Youth Services Bureau, was a guest of honor, as were the youngsters from the Deer Park Community Center's Rockets, who played a short game during halftime.

The Sound will host the Quebec City Kebs in their next home game on Sunday, February 11 at 6:05 p.m.
