Milan Iloski Takes the Golden Boot Lead as OCSC Draws Phoenix
July 5, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Orange County SC News Release
Orange County SC earned a point on the road behind another Milan Iloski brace in a 2-2 draw against Phoenix Rising FC at Wild Horse Pass in Tempe, AZ on Saturday, July 2.
Iloski continued his scorching hot pace hotter than the desert sun with his 11th goal of the campaign in the 6th minute. He made a run that split the Phoenix defense and unleashed a shot from just outside the box through the center backs that left Ben Lundt frozen in his place.
Daniel A. Pedersen nearly doubled OCSC's lead in the 23rd minute as he collected a clearance from about 30 yards out, and hit a strike destined for the top left corner off the half volley. Lundt was able to get to it with a diving save.
OCSC found themselves heading into halftime tied after Albi Skendi was charged with an own goal in the 42nd minute after attempting to clear a Darnell King cross close to his net, tying the game at 1.
In a half they had completely controlled -they did not allow a shot on target- OCSC was now tasked with flipping momentum back in their favor to restore their lead. Luckily, the hottest player in the USL plays in orange and black.
Off a Pedersen corner kick in the 52nd minute, Iloski collected the service just outside the six-yard box and slotted home his league leading 12th goal of the season and restored OCSC's lead at 2-1.
The reigning USL Championship Goalkeeper of the Week Colin Shutler had not seen a lot of action, but in the 77th minute Kevon Lambert headed Aodhan Quinn's corner on target and Shutler took flight, made the save at full extension and kept OCSC ahead.
Controversy struck in the 80th minute after a challenge on Erick "Cubo" Torres led to captain Michael Orozco being sent off for contact with Claudio Repetto's neck in the scrum, and OCSC were down to 10 men for the third straight match. Kevin Partida was shown a second yellow for dissent while on the bench and he too was sent off.
The OCSC defense, now down both of its center backs, put in a valiant effort, deserving of all three points on the road. However, Phoenix substitute Richmond Antwi brought the Rising level once again with a goal in the fifth minute of seven minutes added on, and the match finished 2-2.
OCSC returns home from their road trip on Saturday, July 9 against Monterey Bay FC for our third Gnarly's Carnival of the season at Championship Soccer Stadium. Tickets can be purchased here.
