Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Renegades Football Club announced the re-signing of CFL veteran Mike Sutherland, who will remain in his hometown and add experience and depth to the team’s offensive line.

A native of the nation’s capital, Sutherland has been with Ottawa the past two years after previous stints with Winnipeg and Montreal. After growing up in the east end of the city, Sutherland and his wife Gaby now live in the Hillsdale section of Nepean – making a football life in the Ottawa region come full circle.

Before becoming a pro and a First-Team All-Big West Conference All-Star at the University of Northern Illinois, the now six-foot-one, 300-pound lineman played bantam football for the Ottawa Colts and midget for the Ottawa Trojans. Sutherland followed that up by a three-year stint (1989-1991) playing offensive line for the junior Ottawa Sooners under present Renegades defensive coordinator Greg Marshall. The Sooners advanced to the national junior final in 1991 but lost to the Saskatoon Hilltops.

“It means a lot to me to be continuing my playing career at home in Ottawa,” said Sutherland. “Having Coach Paopao back is great for the year. Last year was just so tough on everybody and to have Joe Back and to try to become successful together, and with him, is important to everybody.”

Sutherland, a successful broadcaster who has worked in news and sports talk radio in the past and now an on-air personality for a French radio station in Gatineau over the off-season, knows first hand about success. He has played in 11 playoff games and two Grey Cup games during his career. His first trip to the championship game came with Montreal, in his last of five years with the Alouettes (1996-2000). The next came with Winnipeg in 2001.

Entering his 10th year in the CFL, nearly a decade since being the third overall pick by Saskatchewan in the 1996 Canadian College draft, Sutherland is excited for the opportunity to remain at home and rekindle a former coach-player relationship.

“What will be a real neat connection is getting the chance to work with Greg Marshall again,” said Sutherland. “Coach Marshall was my head coach with the Sooners when we went to the national championship and it will be great to be back together with him again.”
