Mike Moran Wins SPHL Rookie of the Year Award

HUNTERSVILLE, NC.- The Southern Professional Hockey League on Monday announced that Mike Moran of the Mississippi RiverKings has been selected as the Rookie of the Year in a vote of league coaches, general managers and media representatives. Moran is the first RiverKings player to win Rookie of the Year in the team's SPHL era.

In addition to leading the RiverKings in scoring, Moran was second in the SPHL in goals (29), power play goals (eight - tied) and points (53) and third in game-winning goals (eight - tied) and shorthanded goals (two - tied) despite playing just 42 games for Mississippi. Among first-year players, Moran was second in power play assists (nine - tied), third in assists (24 - tied) and fifth in shots on goal (161).

The Marshfield, Mass. native set the record for the most game winning goals with 8 and the most points scored by a rookie (53) in the RiverKings' SPHL era. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward was also named to SPHL's first team all-league last week. Moran earned SPHL player of the month for March/April by scoring 10 goals and 13 assists in 13 games.
