Mike Madill Named General Manager and Head Coach of the Wranglers
April 26, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Las Vegas Wranglers News Release
Las Vegas - The Las Vegas Wranglers announced today that defenseman and former team captain Mike Madill has been named the team's general manager and head coach for the 2013-14 season. Madill is the third head coach in Wranglers history, and the 2013-14 season will be his first as a professional coach.
"It's a sudden opportunity that's impossible to say no to," said Wranglers General Manager and Head Coach Mike Madill. "The role that I've had with this team as captain, and being given the opportunity to help make decisions and see what happens behind the scenes, is something I can use in this new experience."
"Having the least amount of head coaching experience in this league isn't something I'm too worried about because of the people I'm surrounded with."
In five seasons with the Wranglers, Madill recorded 24 goals and 131 points in 336 games, making him the club record holder for all-time games played. While playing under both former Wranglers head coaches Glen Gulutzan and Ryan Mougenel, the 30-year-old helped guide two different teams to the Kelly Cup Finals - with Gulutzan in 2008 and Mougenel in 2012. Las Vegas went to the playoffs every season with Madill in the lineup, which included winning the Pacific Division in 2008 and two Bruce Taylor Trophies as the Western Conference champions in 2008 and 2012. His leadership ability earned him team captain status for his final two seasons (2011-13) in a Wranglers uniform.
"We are thrilled to have a person of Mike's character to take the reins of the Wranglers," said Wranglers President Billy Johnson. "Mike has been an important part of our history, and we're excited that he will be part of our future."
Madill was named to the ECHL 2007 All-Star Team in his first professional season with the now-defunct Texas Wildcatters. Going overseas with the Asia League's Nippon Paper Cranes in 2010-11, Madill posted five goals and 19 points on his way to earning Best Defensive Defenseman of the Asia League honors that year.
The Kirkland, Quebec native spent four years (2002-06) at St. Lawrence University. In his senior year, Madill was named both team captain and the NCAA's Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Best Defensive Defenseman for 2005-06. The blueliner tallied 14 goals and 63 points in 154 games with the Saints.
Season tickets for the Wranglers' 11th season are on sale now. The Wranglers offer flexible payment options on all plans, and 2013-14 packages start at just $200. Full season tickets can be reserved for as low as 25 percent down, and include benefits such as buddy passes, exclusive team events, and merchandise discounts.
