Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that defenseman Mike Knight has been named team captain for the 2009-10 season.

"Mike is a guy who is looked up to by his teammates for the way he plays the game. He blocks shots, plays in all situations, and will drop the gloves when needed. He has matured as a pro and his work ethic is very valuable to our team," said Chiefs head coach Jeff Flanagan.

A fifth-year pro, Knight will be playing his third season in Johnstown. He came to the Chiefs in 2007-08 after a season in Italy and quickly established himself as a tough defenseman who could also produce points. He was second among defensemen that season with 34 points (9G, 25A) and was second in penalty minutes with 137. Injuries limited him to 44 games last season, but Knight was still productive with 25 points (5G, 20A) and 107 penalty minutes. His 20 assists were most among Chiefs defensemen.

The 6-0, 210-pound blueliner has earned four different call-ups to the AHL during his time in Johnstown. In 2007-08 he played four games with Binghamton and two with Rockford, while in 2008-09 he had two-game stints in Lake Erie and Norfolk. Knight has yet to register an AHL point, but has earned 29 penalty minutes.

Knight will not be in uniform when the Chiefs travel to take on Wheeling in their first preseason game of 2009.
