HICKORY, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds used two explosive innings to thump the Hickory Crawdads, winning 10-5 to salvage a four-game split on Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Cameron Bishop (4-3) cashed in on all the offense for the Shorebirds (28-17), winning with five innings of four-run, eight-hit ball. He walked one and struck out four. Werner Leal (0-1) took the loss in his debut for the Crawdads (16-26), surrendering four runs on nine hits in four innings.
Delmarva spotting Hickory an early three-run lead. Austin O'Banion clubbed his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the second to put the Crawdads on top 1-0. In the third, Yanny Hernandez led off with a single and scored on a Bubba Thompson double. Thompson came in two batters later on Justin Jacobs' sac fly, and the homeside nursed a 3-0 lead after three.
The Shorebirds seized control in the top of the fourth. Zach Jarrett led off with an infield hit and went to third on Seamus Curran's single to right. Trevor Craport brought Jarrett home on a sac fly to make it 3-1, then Ryan Ripken singled to put two on again. Max Hogan laced a double down the right field line that kicked off a diving Miguel Aparicio's glove, scoring Curran and moving Ripken up to third. Jean Carrillo followed with a line drive single to left, scoring both runners to make it 4-3 Shorebirds.
Delmarva kept the foot on the gas against Crawdad reliever Joe Barlow in the fifth. Mason McCoy and Jarrett led off with back-to-back walks, then Seamus Curran belted a towering home run to right field, his eighth shot of the year, to make it 7-3. Craport then worked another walk and went to third two batters later on another double from Hogan. Barlow was then lifted in favor of Joe Kuzia, who allowed Craport to score on a wild pitch. Jean Carrillo then cracked a double to left to bring in Hogan and cap the five-run fifth with the Shorebirds up 9-3.
Hickory got a run back in the home half of the fifth on a two-out RBI single from O'Banion. The teams then traded a run each in the seventh and eighth. Carrillo plated his fourth run of the game with a two-out single in the seventh to make it 1-0. Sam Huff went deep for a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth for the Crawdads, giving the game its final margin.
Carrillo led the way at the plate for the Shorebirds, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Curran finished 2-for-5 with his eighth home run of the season, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Hogan doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in one.
O'Banion went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead the Crawdads, while Huff finished 2-for-5 with his solo homer.
Ryan Wilson and Cameron Ming combined for four innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen to finish the job for Delmarva.
The Shorebirds racked up 15 hits with everybody getting at least one. Delmarva crossed the 10-run threshold for the first time since plating 18 and 14 runs, respectively, in back-to-back games against Asheville on April 7 and 8.
The Shorebirds now return home for a five-game, four-day series against the Lakewood BlueClaws. Matthias Dietz (4-1, 3.28) gets the Friday night start for the Shorebirds against the BlueClaws' Kyle Young (1-0, 0.00). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. with gates opening at 6:00. Friday marks *The Sandlot* 25th anniversary celebration at Perdue Stadium, featuring a visit from "Squints Palledorous" actor Chauncey Leopardi.
