June 7, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
After getting down early, the Wilmington Sharks (3-3) scored two in the fourth and sixth innings, and held on to defeat the Petersburg Generals (1-5) 5-3 on Tuesday night.
Two runs in the top of the first gave Petersburg the lead, but Cletis Avery (Presbyterian) cut into that with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the inning. Both teams were quiet until the fourth inning, when the Sharks struck again. Mark Donadio's (Fordham) single brought home two more, and gave Wilmington a 3-2 lead. They added insurance in the sixth when a wild pitch and an error brought home two more.
Drama came in the ninth, when Steven Powels entered. After striking out the first batter, Jack Rolly (Belmont Abbey) homered to bring the score to 5-3. Powels struck out the next batter, but then two runners reached on a single and an error. With two on and two out, Powels got Will Hancock to fly out and end the game.
Hank Nichols (1-0) got the win for the Sharks. He tossed five innings, allowing four hits, two runs, two walks and struck out one. Hunter Peck (0-1) took the loss, pitching five and one third innings and surrendering four hits. He allowed four runs and walked two. Steven Powels (1) picked up the first save of the season for the Sharks. He pitched one inning, allowed two hits, one run, and two strikeouts.
The Sharks travel to Morehead City on Wednesday and Wilson on Thursday. They'll be back home on Friday to host Wilson, during which it'll be Thirsty Thursday.
