Miami FC Set to Host First-Ever U.S. Open Cup Match

MIAMI, Fla. "" The Miami FC is making its first appearance in the U.S. Open Cup, Wednesday, when the Wilmington Hammerheads come to Ocean Bank Field for a third round match up at 8 p.m.

One for the History Books

The Miami FC grinded out the club's first victory after defeating then-second placed FC Edmonton, 1-0.

The first half started slow, with chances few and far between for both sides. Midway through the first half, the Miami FC seized momentum and began to click on offense.

The Miami FC rode that wave into the second half, dominating possession.

In the 66th minute the Miami FC would get on the board. Jaime Chavez played a great ball to open up Ariel Martinez. Martinez used an incredible touch to get by two Edmonton defenders and finished the chance with a shot to the upper 90.

The Miami FC would hold on to claim the win and leave with three points for the first time ever.

Off to a Great Start

The modern NASL has been competing in the U.S. Open Cup since 2012 and has compiled a 17-12 record in opening round matches.

The NASL went a perfect 6-0 in 2012 and have finished with a winning record in opening round games three of four years.

NASL teams are also very successful when playing their first-ever Open Cup game, as the Miami FC will do Wednesday. Since 2012 teams are 8-1 in their first U.S. Open Cup games.

Players to Watch

Ariel Martinez has been the catalyst for the Miami FC all season.

As a distributor, Martinez has made a total of 308 passes this season with a completion rate of 77%. He has also whipped in 30 crosses and created seven scoring chances for his teammates.

Martinez has also been strong as an attacker. Through seven matches, he has fired off a team-high 12 shots with five on goal. He has also scored two of the Miami FC's six goals in the Spring Season.

He second goal of the season was a left-footed strike that lifted the Miami FC to it's first-ever victory.

Adailton has been a rock for the Miami FC, playing in all 720 minutes this season. He started the season as a midfielder, a new position for the veteran and still performed well for the team, even notching an assist.

With the addition of Richie Ryan, Adailton has moved back to his natural center back position and the Miami FC has reaped the rewards. In three matches with Adailton in the backline the Miami FC has only allowed 3 goals, earned 2 shutouts and picked up four points.

The Miami FC return to action, Saturday, June 4 at 8 p.m. as the squad hosts undefeated Indy Eleven in the last home game of the Spring Season.
