Miami FC Comes up Short against Memphis
June 4, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Miami FC News Release
Saturday, Miami FC took on Memphis 901 FC on the road at Autozone Park. Memphis has been known to start games well all season, and did so against Miami FC by scoring a volley from a corner kick in the first minute to put Memphis up 1-0. Miami FC tried to battle back, but quickly found themselves down 2-0 following a penalty shot from an unlucky handball call in the box. Miami FC seemed to find some rhythm in their attacks after the second goal, and began to attack the Memphis defense by counterattacking and finding space on the flanks of the pitch. Unfortunately, in the 34th minute Miami FC fell victim to another penalty from a handball in the box and found themselves trailing 3-0 early in the game.
Things started to turn around right before the half for Miami FC when Curtis Thorn fired a rocket shot off the frame of the goal. This seemed to motivate the squad to get something going before break, because three minutes later Bolu Akinyode scored a beautiful header goal from a corner to make the score 3-1 at half.
The second half began and things seemed to go back Memphis's way when Akinyode picked up his second yellow card in the 49th minute, putting Miami FC down to 10 men. Tasked with a mountainous comeback being down to 10 men, Miami FC continued to fight and try and pressure the Memphis defense, but got caught on a counterattack and ended up conceding to make it 4-1. Memphis tacked on a final goal in the 89th minute to dampen Miami fans moods despite their team fighting hard the entire game.
"I think the result flatters them honestly," said Coach Anthony Pulis after the match, "I think we found some good areas and did some good things aside from the officiating in the first half."
It was an unfortunate night for Miami FC, but the squad will focus on the positives of the match and regroup this week during training. Miami will look to right the ship on the road against Rio Grande Valley FC next week, a club that has lost its last three matches in a row.
