Fort Lauderdale Strikers News Release
Miami, August 13, 2008 - Miami FC (5-8-9) continues their quest for the playoffs this Friday August 15th at 8 pm (ET) against the Carolina RailHawks (4-9-9), at Wake Med Soccer Park. The match will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel. A victory in Carolina would be a boost for the Blues as they begin a crucial home stand on August 24th. Unfortunately for Carolina, the RailHawks have suffered 4 straight losses, most recently to the Montreal Impact 2-0. Despite the losses they are well within reach of a playoff spot. Miami FC grinded out a nail-biting 0-0 draw against Atlanta and will be looking to put together a good game to clip the wings of the RailHawks.
Miami FC went toe-to-toe with one of the best offenses in the USL-1 last Friday and did not allow a goal. The Silverbacks had averaged 3 goals per game in their last 3 games which were all wins, prior to the game against Miami.
It was an exemplary defensive performance by the Blues. Josh Saunders added to his league-leading 12 shutouts by making some remarkable saves down the stretch to salvage the draw. He was rewarded for his performance by being named USL-1 Player of the Week. The last game was also the Miami debut for the newly-acquired Connally Edozien who filled in valiantly for an injured Léo Inácio. Edozien did his best to open his scoring account for the Blues and had a great chance but the ball rolled just wide of the goal.
Carolina is currently in a rough patch and has lost its last 4 games. In spite of their recent record they are still only 6 points away from a playoff berth and 3 points behind Miami FC. As such, this is a vital game to both sides as they fight for those playoffs positions with the season beginning to wind down. In fact, in their direct battle against one another, one could say this is a game worth 6 points: the 3 awarded to the victorious team, plus the 3 that the losing team does not add to its total. With midfielder Kupono Low on the field, who is tied for 4th in the USL-1 in assists with 4, the RailHawks are not going to be beaten easily.
