Moosic, PA - The Syracuse Mets turned a triple play and needed just three hits to beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, 3-1, on Friday night at PNC Field. The triple play is the first for Syracuse since July 22, 2012 against the Norfolk Tides.

Syracuse (30-30) started the scoring in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Danny Espinosa walked. Matt Kemp followed with a two-run home run that he crushed over the left-center-field wall for a 2-0 Syracuse lead.

The Mets kept the RailRiders offense in check with solid pitching and excellent defense. In the bottom of the fourth, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had Breyvic Valera at second base and Mike Ford at first base with one out. Mike Tauchman lined out to Syracuse first baseman Dilson Herrera who then dove to the first base bag to double off Ford before Herrera threw the ball to third base where Valera tried to advance to but was thrown out for the triple play.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (33-25) did get on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Trey Amburgey led off with a solo home run to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

That was the only run allowed by Mets starting pitcher Chris Flexen. The 24-year-old allowed just three hits in the game while striking out four batters, lowering his earned run average to 3.59, which would rank fifth in the International League if Flexen had enough innings to qualify for league statistical rankings. Flexen was perfect through three innings and didn't allow a hit until the fifth.

Syracuse made another nice defensive play in the seventh. Tyler Wade led off with a hit down the right-field line. Arismendy Alcantara fielded the ball in right field and threw to second baseman Luis Guillorme who relayed the ball to Rubén Tejada at third base to apply the tag on Wade for the out to stymie the RailRiders opportunity for a rally.

The Mets added an insurance run in the ninth. With one out, Tejada singled. Guillorme followed with a double to the center-field wall that scored Tejada from first for a 3-1 Mets advantage.

Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continue their series on Saturday afternoon. RHP Walker Lockett will be on the mound for the Mets opposite RHP Brody Koerner for the RailRiders. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
