St. Lucie Mets News Release

The St. Lucie Mets dropped the first two games of their three-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs at Digital Domain Park. Game one, which began on Sunday night was suspended with the Mets trailing 6-0 in the top of the eighth inning with two outs due to the stadium lights malfunctioning. The game was resumed Monday morning prior to the regular scheduled nine-inning contest.

The Mets got a great start out of Robert Carson on Sunday night but could not get the offense going against Stone Crab starter Joe Cruz. Cruz shut down the Mets through seven innings allowing only four hits with only one St. Lucie Mets player reaching second base. Carson was just as good for the Mets with exception to one inning. Carson was touched up for three runs in the second inning which would be all the offense the Stone Crabs would need. Carson's final line: seven strong innings allowing only three runs, two earned while striking out seven batters. The Stone Crabs put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning scoring three more times off of reliever Erik Turgeon before the lights went out and the game had to be suspended. When play resumed Monday morning, the Mets final six hitters were retired closing out the 7-0 loss. Carlos Beltran, Wilmer Flores, Stefan Welch and Rafael Fernandez accounted for the Mets four hits.

In the second game, the Mets again could not solve the Stone Crabs pitching. Starter Brad Holt ran into trouble early allowing three runs in the top of the first inning. The Mets battled back with Kai Gronauer singling in Wilmer Flores in the second inning cutting the lead to 3-1. The Mets evened the score in the third inning keyed by a Carlos Beltran RBI single making it a 3-3 game. The Stone Crabs got a run in the fifth inning making it 4-3 and ending Holt's day after five innings of work. Charlotte tacked on three more runs against Kyle Allen putting the game out of reach at 7-3 which would end up being the final. The Stone Crabs retired fifteen of the final sixteen Mets hitters en route to the 7-3 victory. Beltran led the Mets with two hits and an RBI. Flores, Richard Lucas and Hector Pellot each added a hit and a run scored and Kai Gronauer had a hit and an RBI in the loss.

The Mets close out their series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs Tuesday night at Digital Domain Park. The Mets starter has yet to be announced. After starting the second half 7-3, the Mets look to snap their two-game skid and get back in the win column.
