Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla-Between the wind, the rain and a dominant pitching performance from Mets top prospect Phillip Humber (2-5), The Daytona grounds crew spent just as much time on the field Friday night as the actual Cubs did.
In Game 2 of the three-game series St. Lucie was fueled by a masterful pitching performance from their former 2004 first round pick from Rice University. Humber logged seven full innings of work and surrendered just one run on three hits while striking out 10 Cubs batters, as he guided the Mets to the victory by a final of 6-3.
Daytona struggled for most of the evening to produce base runners, as the Cubs were retired in order by the young right-hander five times in seven frames of work.
The only consistent bat in the lineup belonged to catcher Tony Richie, as he led the charge for the second straight evening with a 2-for-3 performance including a run scored and an RBI to raise his batting average to .312.
The Cubs did show signs of life in the eighth inning, when third baseman Enrique Cruz took advantage of a pitching change and belted a two-run homerun off of Mets reliever Kole Strayhorn to draw Daytona to within three runs at 6-3.
But the rain clouds that had been circling around the ballpark for most of the evening eventually emptied and game was later canceled in the bottom half of the ninth inning as the Cubs lost their final at-bat.
With the loss Daytona dropped to 1-2 as the Mets improved to an unblemished 3-0 and clinched the series victory. The Cubs will try to close out the three-game set on a positive note Saturday night as they send right-hander Juan Mateo (5-1, 2.48) to make the start in the series finale, as he faces off against Mets righty Vincent Cordova (3-6, 4.40).
First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST.
