Mets hold on for 1-0 win over Fire Frogs Dunn strikes out 7 in 5 innings, Urena drives in only run
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets held on for a 1-0 win over the Florida Fire Frogs on Monday at Osceola County Stadium.
Closer Tyler Bashlor stranded the tying run at third base to end the game when Jonathan Morales flew out to right field.
The previous batter, Braxton Davidson, singled to send Austin Riley to third base with one out. However, Davidson rounded first base too far and Jhoan Urena threw back to first base to get Davidson for the second out. Davidson vehemently argued he was safe and was ejected. Morales, who had been 3 for 3, then flew out to end the game.
The Mets scored the only run in the first inning. J.C. Rodriguez hit a one-out double off Fire Frogs starter Touki Toussaint. Urena followed with a double of his own to plate Rodriguez for the 1-0 lead.
Mets starter Justin Dunn put together his best outing of the season. He pitched five innings and scattered five hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out a season-high seven.
Kevin Canelon pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen before being relieved by Bashlor after he surrendered a leadoff single in the ninth to Riley.
Bashlor converted his seventh save in seven chances.
The game was billed as an impressive pitching matchup between two young starters. Toussaint, 20, was the 16th overall draft pick by the Diamondbacks in 2014. He was traded to the Braves in 2015.
Dunn, the 19th overall pick by the Mets last summer, moved back into the rotation after pitching out of the bullpen his three previous appearances.
Both offenses had opportunities but struggled mightily when given chances. After Urena's RBI double, the Mets went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 runners. Florida went 1 for 8 with RISP and stranded seven.
The Mets pitched their fourth shutout in their last 20 games. They are 18-8 in their last 26 games and have won three in row.
The Mets (30-27) will go for the sweep of the Fire Frogs (22-36) when the teams complete their four-game series at Osceola County Stadium on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
