FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels clipped the St. Lucie Mets 3-2 on Friday night at Hammond Stadium. The Mussels extended their winning streak to five games while the Mets dropped a fourth straight contest.
With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Willy Joe Garry, Jr. hit a two-out triple. Edouard Julien then followed with a RBI single to give the Mussels a 3-2 lead.
Denny Bentley shut down the Mets in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his third save. He walked Nic Gaddis to start the ninth but then picked off pinch runner Ranfy Adon at first base.
Julien started the scoring by hitting a leadoff home run in the first inning against Mets starter Austin Faith.
The Mussels hit three consecutive two-out singles off Faith in the third inning to push across another run for a 2-0 lead.
The Mets got on the board in the fifth inning thanks to the legs of Branden Fryman. Fryman beat out an infield hit, stole second and later forced a balk while trying to steal home. That made it 2-1.
Fryman reached on a walk in the seventh, stole second base again and came around to score on a Joe Suozzi single to tie the game 2-2. Suozzi was 2 for 3 with a walk.
Faith pitched three innings. He allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Reliever Luis Montas pitched the three middle innings. He did not give up a hit and faced the minimum. He walked one batter but erased the base runner with a double play.
Gaddis went 1 for 1 with a single and three walks.
Fryman went 1 for 4 with a single, walk and two runs.
The Mets (16-12) and Mighty Mussels (15-13) play the fifth game of their series at Hammond Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m.
