Memphis Rallies Late to Sink Iowa

Iowa Cubs News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (34-60) led until the eighth but let the edge slide as they took a 6-4 loss to the Memphis Redbirds (60-35), Monday at AutoZone Park.

In his first outing with Iowa since May 22, Luke Farrell got off to a shaky start but was able to right the outing. After allowing the first three batters of the game to reach, the righty set down two on strikes and forced a groundout to get out of the bases-loaded jam. Farrell walked four in an otherwise effective outing as he pitched 3.0 scoreless innings and allowed two runs with five strikeouts.

Jason Vosler spoiled the scoreless game, powering a two-run homer to right in the fourth. It was his fifth long ball in 20 games with Iowa and his organization-leading 17th of the season.

Iowa built a 4-1 edge on the back of Ryan Court's 2-for-4 game with one run scored and one RBI, before the tables turned in the bottom of the eighth. Memphis sent 11 batters to the plate, spotting a five-run inning to take a 6-4 lead and solidify the final score.

Duane Underwood Jr. pitched 4.0 one-run innings in relief for the I-Cubs before handing the ball to Cory Mazzoni. Mazzoni (4-3) allowed four runs, three earned, in the eighth and was tagged with the loss. Dakota Mekkes was tagged with one run as he secured the final two outs for Iowa.

Iowa and Memphis go head-to-head for the second game of the set tomorrow to 7:05 p.m. CT. Follow the action on AM 940, www.iowacubs.com or MiLB.TV.
