Memphis 901 FC Still Alive for Playoff Slot
October 14, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Memphis 901 FC News Release
Despite being in second-to-last place in the conference just six weeks ago, Memphis 901 FC has a path to secure a playoff spot in its inaugural season.
For this to happen, Memphis 901 FC needs to win at Charleston Battery on Wednesday and at home against Louisville City FC Saturday night. In addition, Charleston and Birmingham Legion FC both need to lose each of their final two matches.
If Memphis wins twice, and Charleston and Birmingham both lose twice - all three would finish with 40 points - and 901 FC would claim the conference's final playoff spot via tiebreakers.
Memphis would top Charleston on the first tiebreaker, which is total wins (11 vs. 9). Birmingham would also have 11 wins.
Memphis would top Birmingham on the second tiebreaker, which is goal differential
Memphis currently holds the advantage over BHM in goal differential, and two wins by MEM and two losses by BHM gives them no path to pass MEM
So, needless to say, this is a crucial week for the expansion club!
Should 901 FC secure a playoff spot, it would become just the third club in the last three seasons to make the postseason in its inaugural year (Nashville SC, 2018; Reno 1868 FC, 2017).
