Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - It'd been nearly 50 days since Memphis 901 FC last scored a goal inside AutoZone Park.
The club ended that streak in style Saturday afternoon notching not one, but two gorgeous goals as 901 FC played to a 2-2 draw with Birmingham Legion FC.
Memphis (1-6-3, 6 pts) continued its recent form by applying pressure early and often. After missing its first few attempts by just meters, the club made sure to go into halftime in control.
Midfielder Cam Lindley scored an absolute wondergoal in the 40th minute from 25 yards out to put the hosts up 1-0 at the break. It was the first halftime lead at home for 901 FC this season and the 4,563 fans in attendance were bringing the noise.
As the rain picked up in the second half, so did the physical play between both clubs. Like a pair of heavyweight fighters, both squads exchanged multiple counter attacks in the final 15 minutes.
Birmingham (3-3-2, 11 pts) connected first with midfielder Daniel Johnson delivering a strike from outside the box, evening up the score at 1-1 in the 84th minute.
Just two minutes later, 901 FC midfielder Adam Najem dished out perhaps the assist of the season to forward Duane Muckette who put Memphis up 2-1 in the 86th minute. Najem used his blazing speed to get to the Birmingham end line and when he found himself running out of room. Najem slid, tapped the ball along the end line to himself and found Muckette waiting to tap it in from close range.
Memphis held onto its lead as both teams entered five minutes of added stoppage time.
In the second minute of added time, Memphis was whistled for a penalty and Birmingham striker Chandler Hoffman scored from close range to cap the game off at 2-2.
For Memphis, Saturday night's draw put an end to a four-match losing streak and helped keep the team on track as it hunts for a Top 10 spot in the Eastern Conference. Memphis travels to take on Hartford Athletic next Friday, May 10, before playing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 15.
The time, location and opponent for the Open Cup will be announced next week.
