Saginaw Spirit News Release

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit wrapped up last weekend with the addition of three more points to the score sheet, for a total of nine points and a record of 4-2-1-0. The team looks ahead to a weekend series featuring home contests against the Sudbury Wolves and the Belleville Bulls.

Winger Jordan Skellett continues to lead the Spirit offense in the points department, averaging nearly one and half points per game with a total of 11 posted in seven contests. The overager is currently ranked sixth in the league's top scorer's category. Winger Josh Shalla and center Ivan Telegin are at the top of team's goal rankings with five apiece, plus Telegin enters the week on a six game consecutive point streak (September 19 to present). The Russian forward also wrapped up a four game consecutive goal streak following last Saturday's game (September 24 to October 2). His play of late has led to Telegin entering the week as the top rookie scorer in the league. Blueliner Nick Crawford garnered a lot of attention in the team's last two games, scoring two goals and adding two assists, while d-man T.J. Brodie enters the week tied for second in the league's defenseman top scorer's category with 10 points.

The Spirit will host the Sudbury Wolves in the first of their two game season series this Friday, October 9, at The Dow Event Center. The Wolves enter the week as the third top scoring team in the Eastern Conference with 27 goals in seven games. Atlanta Thrashers pick Eric O'Dell finished out last season as the second top scorer on the Wolves roster with 63 points, and with the graduation of leading scorer Matt Dias, is on track to take the top spot this season. He has already scored five goals and nine assists in nine games for an average of two points a game. Sophomore center and top tier NHL prospect John McFarland is a big contributor up front with four goals and seven assists on the season, while Phoenix Coyotes prospect Jared Staal is also a threat on the attack having already posted two goals and nine assists this season. New York Rangers prospect Daniel Maggio is a constant presence on the blue line, while overager Andrew Loverock and Alain Valiquette currently share duty in net.

The Belleville Bulls are in town to take on the home team Spirit on Saturday, October 10. The perennial Eastern Conference power house lost of lot of their offense from last season, with only 15 goals posted in six games. Two of the team's top three scorers man the blueline. Chicago Blackhawks pick Shawn Lalonde and NHL prospect Stephen Silas each have three goals and four assists on the season. Veteran winger Matthew Tipoff (two goals, six assists) and Detroit Red Wings pick Stephen Johnston (two goals, two assists) are the team's top scoring forwards. Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Andy Bathgate rounds out the offense. The Bulls have two strong options for the netminding duties, after taking German Philipp Grubauer in the 2009 CHL Import Draft and Tyson Teichmann with their first pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection.
