Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves opened up a 12-game road trip with a 1-0 shutout win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field.
Both starting pitchers were impressive in no-decision efforts. Erie's Wilmer Flores went four scoreless innings, allowing one hit with a walk and five strikeouts. Portland's Brett Kennedy went 5.1 scoreless, allowing three hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Portland threatened in the fifth against Erie reliever Kyle Zurak. With two outs, Izzy Wilson and Kole Cottam each singled and Tyler Dearden walked. Zurak induced a lineout to right from David Hamilton to get out of the jam.
Erie threatened in the top of the sixth. Andre Lipcius was hit by a pitch with one out and Parker Meadows singled. Portland summoned Joan Martinez out of the bullpen and he induced a 6-4-3 double play from Quincy Nieporte to get out of the inning.
Nick Kuzia was the next man up out of the Erie bullpen in the sixth. He retired the first two batters before giving up a single to Hudson Potts and a walk to Stephen Scott. Kuzia got Alex Binelas to ground out to end the inning.
Kuzia would go on to hurl a 1-2-3 seventh before giving way to Elvis Alvarado the eighth. Alvarado worked a perfect eighth, sending the game into the ninth with no score.
Portland reliever Jacob Wallace also worked a perfect eighth and was brought back out for the ninth. He retired Lipcius for the first out. Meadows then put up the game's only run as he connected on a solo home run off of Wallace for a 1-0 Erie lead. The home run was his ninth of the season and third hit of the game.
Alvarado (2-0) earned the win after shutting down the Dogs in order in the ninth. He worked two innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
Wallace (1-2) took the loss allowing a run on one hit with no walks and two strikeouts in two innings.
