SEA DOGS SPLIT SERIES IN SUNDAY LOSS - The Portland Sea Dogs fell to the Hartford Yard Goats on Sunday afternoon, 5-3 to split the six-game series with the Colorado Rockies affiliate. The scoring started in the top of the second inning for the Sea Dogs. Kole Cottam led off with a double. One out later, Nick Northcut crushed a two-run homer to right field. It was his second Double-A homer and gave the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. In the third with two outs in the inning, Daniel Montano sent a solo homer over the wall in right-center and cut into Portland's lead, 2-1. The Yard Goats benefited from their second homer of the day when Daniel Cope hit a solo bomb in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game 2-2. Hartford added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Aaron Schunk, giving them their first lead of the day, 3-2. A run came around to score for the Yard Goats in the bottom of the seventh. Cope worked a one-out walk and Isaac Collins doubled, putting runners at second and third. Montano came through with an RBI base hit, adding to Hartford's lead, 4-2. Portland got back on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth frame. Ceddanne Rafaela collected a one-out base hit and Christian Koss doubled, placing runners at second and third. Hudson Potts grounded out to first base, bringing in Rafaela to make it a 4-3 game. Hartford added their final run of the day on another RBI from Cope, this time on a single, and the Sea Dogs went down in order in the ninth inning, losing to the Yard Goats 5-3.
KOSS KEEPS CRUSHING - Christian Koss has been one of the offensive leaders for the Sea Dogs since the season began. On the season, Koss is batting .286 with 12 homers and 61 RBI, but in the second half, he decided to kick it into gear. So far in the back half of the season, Koss has hit for a .333 average (35-for-105) with six doubles, six homers, and 24 RBI while scoring 25 runs himself. He has collected nine multi-hit games in the second half, including three of the games during the current series in Hartford.
FIRST TIME SINCE WHEN? - The Sea Dogs and SeaWolves will be facing off for the first time since 2019. The last time these two teams played against each other was June 17-19 at Erie. The Sea Dogs took two of the three games in Pennsylvania.
A LOOK AT THE SEAWOLVES - The SeaWolves are currently in second place in the Southwest Division of the Eastern League, 1.0 game behind the Bowie Baysox. Andrew Navigato leads Erie with a .296 batting average while Quincy Nieporte leads the team in home runs with 21. On the mound, Reese Olson leads the team in strikeouts with 118 through 82.2 innings this year.
CLOSE THE BOOK ON JULY - Christian Koss led the Sea Dogs in the month of July with a .337 batting average, including eight doubles. Ceddanne Rafaela had the second-best average with .312. David Hamilton swiped 21 bases throughout the month of July. On the mound, Bryan Mata finished with
a 2.08 ERA through five starts while Michael Gettys did not allow an earned run through his four appearances. Brian Van Belle struck out 30 batters in 27.1 innings, leading Portland in that category.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - August 2, 2015 - In a wild game at Hadlock Field, Sam Travis homered and knocked in four, Tim Roberson had 4 hits and 3 RBI, but Harrisburg beat the 'Dogs 16-12 in 11 innings at Hadlock Field.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brett Kennedy will take the mound for the Sea Dogs tonight. He last pitched July 27th at Hartford and tossed 5.0 innings allowing four runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out three. In July, Kennedy with 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA. In five starts, he pitched 22.2 innings allowing 14 runs (12 earned) on 31 hits while walking seven and striking out 18.
