
McSweeny and Powell Honored by PIFL

Bethlehem, PA: In release made today, the league office of the Professional Indoor Football League announced that Lehigh Valley Steelhawks Quarterback Shane Mcsweeny and Defensive Back Joe Powell were selected as the Week Nine Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week respectively for their efforts in the team's 50-31 victory over the Alabama Hammers.
Mcsweeny (6'3", Wesley College) was honored as the Offensive Player of the Week after his best performance of the season thus far in his return from injury. The dual-threat signal caller ran for 51 yards on the ground and three touchdowns while also completing 15 of 22 passes for 221 yards and three additional scores. At one point in the game the Steelhawks scored on six straight possessions. McSweeny leads the whole league in rushing (384) and rushing touchdowns(14), and has tossed for another 20 scores in the seven games he has played (Missed 5/9 game against Columbus-injury).
Powell (6'2", Globe Tech) was honored as Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after his three interception, 6.5 tackle performance where the defensive back took sole possession of the league interception lead with nine in just seven games played. The Steelhawks lockdown corner is two picks shy of setting a league single season record.
Additionally the league announced that Columbus Lions K Lindsey Wolfe was named the Special Teams Players of the Week.
Mcsweeny, Powell and the Steelhawks are off this weekend for the Memorial Day Weekend Bye but return home for a Friday night tilt against rival the Richmond Raiders on Friday, May 29th on Embassy Bank Field inside the PPL Center at 7:05pm. The "Scout Night" game will be brought to the fans by Service Electric Cable TV & Communications, with the first 1,500 fans receiving a free Steelhawks Hat.
