NASHVILLE, TN (May 19, 2015) - The Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) is proud to announce the Week 9 Players of the Week.
Offensive Player of the Week: QB Shane McSweeny (Lehigh Valley)
In an all-around dominant performance, the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (6-2) got back to their winning ways on Sunday thanks to a huge offensive performance from QB Shane McSweeny (6'2 218, Wesley College). Accounting for a total of six touchdowns, McSweeny completed 15 of 22 passes for 221 yards while also managing to rush for another 51. He has only thrown an INT in one of his seven starts and now has the Steelhawks sitting alone in 2nd place in the PIFL standings only a half-game behind the Lions. Following their upcoming bye week, the Hawks will continue their three-game home stand when they meet up with the idle Richmond Raiders for the first time this season.
Honorable Mentions: WR Brandon Renford (Lehigh Valley), WR Richie Martin (Trenton) Defensive Player of the Week: DB Joe Powell (Lehigh Valley)
Earning his second defensive nod of the season, first since Week 5, DB Joe Powell (6'2 190, Globe Tech) has been putting on a defensive clinic the season terrorizing opposing offenses by picking off quarterbacks an overall high nine times. In Sunday's 50-31 victory over Alabama, Powell intercepted Alabama passers a combined three times giving him a PIFL high eight overall marking him just two shy of tying the PIFL single-season record of ten set by Ginikachi Ibe (2012) and Roshawn Marshall (2014).
Honorable Mention: DB Mike McMillian (Trenton), LB Larry Edwards (Columbus) Special Teams Player of the Week: K Lindsey Wolfe (Columbus)
Columbus K Lindsey Wolfe (6'0 180, Fort Valley St.) earned the Week 9 Special Teams Player of the Week nomination, second this year, by notching a league-high 14 points in the Lions 44-38 thrilling win over Nashville. Wolfe kicked in three Uno's, was a perfect 5 for 5 on PAT attempts, and was 2 of 4 on field goal tries successfully connecting on attempts from 54 and 45 yards away. His 54-yard field goal at the end of the first half tied him for the longest field goal in PIFL history, now sharing the mark with Trey Crum from back in 2012. With the win, Columbus maintains their grip on first place and following a bye week will close out the season with two of their three remaining games at home.
Honorable Mention: LB Robert Caldwell (Columbus)
Week 10 of the PIFL features only one matchup, which could serve as an early playoff elimination game between the Trenton Freedom (4-3) and the Richmond Raiders (4-4). The winner of next Saturday's contest will move into fourth place, only the top four teams in the PIFL standings will move on to the 2015 playoffs.
