CARY, N.C. - The Carolina RailHawks have signed veteran midfielder Tony McManus for the remainder of the 2011 season.
McManus will strengthen the RailHawks' already stout midfield and bring some needed depth to the middle of the park.
"Tony is one of the hardest working midfielders in the league," said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. "He became available for the end of the season, and we knew we needed to add a couple players to our squad who could contribute. We expect he can do that. We have a lot of respect for him and we're glad to have him on board."
McManus, 30, spent the last two seasons with the Portland Timbers, before their move to Major League Soccer this season. He appeared in 51 matches and scored one goal in his two seasons at PGE Park, and he helped the Timbers win the 2009 USL First Division Commissioner's Cup.
McManus spent the bulk of his career with the Atlanta Silverbacks from 2005-08, where he appeared in 156 matches and scored seven goals. In 2007, he led the Silverbacks to the USL-1 Championship Final.
"This is a great opportunity to be joining a team in the RailHawks position," said McManus. "I hope to be able to come in and add depth to the squad, whether as a starter or coming off the bench. I want to help the team win games and accomplish the goal of winning a championship."
McManus was drafted in the sixth round of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire after a standout collegiate career at Alabama-Birmingham. As a senior in 2003, he was named the Conference USA Defender of the Year and an NSCAA All-American.
McManus will be available for selection for the RailHawks' match on Saturday at Puerto Rico. The match will be broadcast live from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, on CarolinaRailHawks.com. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. He'll be available to make his WakeMed Soccer Park debut on Aug. 17, when the RailHawks face Minnesota at 7 p.m.
