Elmira Jackals News Release
Elmira, NY - Goaltender Ryan McIntosh earned his first shutout of the season as the Elmira Jackals scorched the Port Huron Flags 4-0 Friday night at the First Arena.
It was fitting that this contest took place on Friday the 13th, as the Flags probably would've wanted to be anywhere but the First Arena. Early into the first period Elmira jumped onto the scoreboard with a power play goal by Jason Sessa at 6:28. The goal was Sessa's 8th of the season, assisted by Kevin Cooper and Florian Iberer. At the 16:58 mark, the Jackals scored another power play goal to give themselves a two goal lead. Rookie defenseman Bobby Gates, making his professional and Jackals debut scored his first career goal with a one-time from the right face-off circle, assisted by Sessa and Iberer. The score stayed the same as the Jackals were able to stop a five on three Port Huron power play, and kept the puck away from goalie Ryan McIntosh as they out-shot the Flags 14-5.
At the beginning of the second period the Jackals had to start a man down as Chris Chaput's penalty for hooking was still in affect for five seconds. Elmira was able to keep the Flags scoreless and build further momentum in front of a ruckus crowd of 2,380. 12:33 into the 2nd period the Jackals extended their lead to three with a goal from Konstantin Kalmikov, his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Jarrett Konkle and Iberer's third helper of the game. At the end of the second the Jackals led the Flags 3-0 on the scoreboard and 22-16 in shots.
The Jackals started the third period with a 3:49 power play as former Jackal Bryan Cummings was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct minor at the 20:00 mark of the second period, adding to his high sticking call at 19:44. The Jackals were unable to score on the prolonged power play, but they were able to keep the Flags scoreless on another five-on-three Port Huron advantage six minutes into the third. Rookie forward Craig MacDonald and Flags defenseman Kam White were both given misconduct penalties at 12:18, cutting their nights short, but in the process White gave the Jackals a 7-minute power play with a minor for roughing and cross-checking major. Kevin Cooper would cap the scoring with a power play goal at 17:28, his 16th goal of the season, assisted by Sessa and Iberer. The assist was Iberer's 4th of the game, his highest point total in a Jackals uniform.
Ryan McIntosh was scintillating in goal for Elmira, stopping all 24 shots he faced for the Jackals first shutout of the season. Former Jackal Jeremy Symington took the loss for Port Huron, making 30 saves on 34 shots. The Jackals finished 3-for-12 on the power play, while the Flags were 0-for-8. This is the Jackals 12th win of the season, their 5th in a row, and 4th consecutive home win as well.
The Jackals are back in action tomorrow night as they host the Flint Generals for the first of back-to-back games at the First Arena. Saturday's face off is scheduled for 7:05 pm. The two teams will play a 4 pm afternoon game Sunday in Elmira.
