"We are always looking to upgrade the talent on our roster," Head Coach Sparky McEwen explained. "I guarantee, we will sign at least one player from this tryout."
McEwen's guarantee will provide at least one talented "diamond in the rough" to realize his dream of becoming a professional football player.

"The main focus of our staff this off season is to compile a roster of championship caliber athletes. Our open tryouts provide us the opportunity to evaluate local talent and hopefully find that diamond in the rough," said Head Coach Sparky McEwen. "This is a very important time of the year as we prepare for what we believe will be a history making season."
Sparky McEwen has been one of the league's leaders when it comes to signing players from open tryouts. In the past, McEwen has signed AFL talents Timon Marshall, Colin Bryant and Johnnie Balous from open tryouts. The Yard Dawgz have signed numerous players from open tryouts, as well. In 2009, defensive back Davion Mitchell, kicker David Hendrix and receivers Matt Fields and Geory Lewis earned roster spots. The 2008 Yard Dawgz were assigned kicker Ben Scott and wide receivers Keaton Graham and Jared Smith following their performances in the tryouts held in mid-December. Most notably, the Yard Dawgz signed University of Oklahoma offensive lineman, Howard Duncan after he participated in the 2005 open tryout. Duncan went on to become one the best lineman in the Arena Football League.
The Yard Dawgz will also host a kicker tryout the following Sunday, January 10 at the Cox Convention Center. The Yard Dawgz have had a long history of successful kickers including Peter Martinez and former University of Central Oklahoma star A.J. Haglund.
