McElroy, Rich make CBA All-Defensive Team

GARY, Ind. (March 8, 2004) – Steelheads guards Immanuel McElroy and Jemeil Rich were named to the Continental Basketball Association’s All-Defensive Team on Monday.

“Both have done a great job and are a big part of our success this season,” Steelheads Head Coach Duane Ticknor said. “They both play hard on both ends of the court and I am happy that both received recognition for their defensive skills.

Idaho Stampede guard DeSean Hadley was the CBA Defensive Player of the Year. Also making the team are Sioux Falls Skyforce forward Leonard White and Great Lakes Storm center Leon Smtih.

Rich received his second-straight CBA All-Defensive Team selection, The 5-foot 10 Gary native averaged 2.7 steals per game (2nd in the league) and 15.5 points per contest in 47 games played. He also led the league in assists with 10.6 per game. Earlier on Monday, Rich was named the CBA’s Player of the Week.

Rich’s teammate McElroy, who was the 2002-03 Rookie of the Year, earned his Defensive Team selection as a guard/forward with 0.9 steals, 0.4 blocked shots, 5.2 rebounds and 16.6 points per game in 48 games played.

The Steelheads signed 5-10 guard Tim Winn. Winn, who most recently played with the Rockford Lightning and averaged 16.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists in 21 games. He is known for his tenacious defense, quickness, durability and floor vision.Winn combines a 32-inch vertical leap with a 300-pound bench press. The Steelheads also placed guard Keith McLeod on the Inactive Reserve List and waived forward Aki Thomas.

The Steelheads play their first-ever playoff game on Tuesday at Idaho in the best-of-five first-round series. They also play at Idaho on Wednesday. Both games are at 8:10 p.m., Gary time and can be heard on the World Wide Web at www.steelheadshoops.com. Just click on the Sportsjuice icon. Their first-ever home playoff game is Friday at 7:05 p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center. Game 4, if necessary is Saturday night at home. If a fifth game is necessary, it will be on Thursday, March 18 at Idaho.
