Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings News Release
Blaine, MN- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, backed by six total points from Kalamazoo native Chad McDonald, skated to an easy 8-2 victory over the Dawson Creek Rage Friday evening.
Only three minutes and thirty seconds into the first period, the Jr. K-Wings took advantage of a two-on-one opportunity shorthanded, and took a one-goal lead. McDonald buried a wrist shot near side after a great pass and individual effort for Tyler Burden as the K-Wings skated a man down.
The rest of the period passed with each team having two total power plays. Alex Okicki made saves on all seven of the shots he faced.
The second period got underway with a quick strike from Dawson Creek as Jason Wark banged home a rebound one minute and thirty-one seconds in to tie the game at one.
On the Jr. K-Wings third power play opportunity, Chad McDonald was the beneficiary of several tape-to-tape passes that culminated in a goal. Jacob McDowell found McDonald backdoor for a tap in goal five minutes and fifty-one seconds into the second.
Only minutes later on another power play, Chad McDonald completed the hat trick with another back-door score with an assist from Anthony Appleyard to take a 3-1 lead.
But McDonald was not done, only two minutes after his third goal, he added a fourth. McDonald took a snap shot and beat the goaltender Edward Dyson glove side to increase the lead to 4-1 with another assist from McDowell.
Not to be outdone, Chris Hughes tallied on another power play opportunity scoring unassisted to extend the lead to 5-1 twelve minutes and seventeen seconds into the second period.
Dawson Creek continued to fight back and off another rebound cut the deficit to three with a goal by Mitch Chagnon, thirteen minutes and forty-three seconds into the second.
The Dawson Creek Rage, however, could not contain the Jr. K-Wings. Kyle Gattelaro added another power play goal to stretch the lead back to four goals with assists from McDonald and Matt Wurst.
With only twenty-six seconds left in the second period, Andrew Graves tapped in a rebound to put the Jr. K-Wings up 7-2 with assists from Christian George and Danny Hamburg. The period finally came to a close with the Jr. K-Wings leading by five goals.
The third period started with a goaltending change as Jack Surgenor came into the game for Edward Dyson. However, this had little effect on Chad McDonald as he found himself on a breakaway and buried his fifth of the night top shelf, glove side. It was McDonalds third power play goal, fifth total goal and sixth total point. This gave the Jr. K-Wings an 8-2 lead.
The horn blew and the Jr. K-Wings completed the 8-2 victory going five for eight on the power play. Alex Okicki ended the night stopping twenty-one of the total twenty-three shots in the victory.
Kalamazoo will play game three of their four games in Blaine, Minnesota tomorrow morning with a 4 p.m. Central Time start against the Bismarck Bobcats.
The Jr. K-Wings will return to the Borgess Health Rink at Wings West on Saturday, September 24h for a 2 p.m. home opening contest versus the Jamestown Ironmen.
