New Mexico Scorpions News Release
Flashback to December 2007. United Blood Services Rio Rancho challenged its sister center in McAllen, Texas, to a contest in conjunction with their respective hockey teams, the New Mexico Scorpions and the Rio Grande Killer Bees. The Scorpions held a blood drive prior to the game against the Bees on December 15 in the Santa Ana Star Casino. Not only did the Scorpions win the game 10 - 3, but they helped United Blood Services collect 84 units of blood. When the Scorpions played against the Bees in Texas on January 12, they once again were victorious with a score of 4-2, and the McAllen center collected 28 units of blood in the drive held prior to the game. New Mexico was a winner all the way around.
Per the rules of the contest, the "losing" United Blood Services executive director, David Veloz, will be at the Rio Rancho center on Wednesday, March 26, serving dinner to the winning Rio Rancho staff, donors, Scorpions' staff, and United Blood Services New Mexico executive director, Elizabeth Waltman. "I look forward to fulfilling my end of the bargain. The phlebotomists, the community of Rio Rancho, and the Scorpions team did a great job of collecting many units of blood during a critical time of year," said Veloz.
Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and who weigh 110 pounds or more may give blood. Federal regulations require donors to wait 56 days between donations. Donors should eat healthy meals and drink plenty of fluids before donating. Picture ID is required.
