Mavs Slip Past Mallards

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Carter Verhaeghe broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period and Colin Markison scored twice as the host Missouri Mavericks (22-3-1) slipped away from the Quad City Mallards (15-10-3) 4-2 Sunday.

Despite the defeat, the Mallards head into the ECHL's Christmas break in first place in the Midwest Division.

Verhaeghe buried Tyler Barnes' cross-ice pass to put the Mavericks on top 3-2 at 15:33 of the third. Markison's empty net goal clinched the Missouri victory with just eight seconds remaining.

Markison set the stage for Verhaeghe's game winner by knotting the score at two with shorthanded goal at 15:16 of the second period. Markison jumped on a loose puck and swooped into the Mallard goalmouth to score the second Missouri goal.

Sam Warning had snapped a 1-1 deadlock and given the Mallards their first lead from the doorstep at 1:43 of the second.

It was the Mavericks who opened the scoring with C.J. Ludwig's drive from just inside the blue line at 3:23 of the first period. The Mallards were on the power play when Alex Gudbranson pounced on a loose puck in the left wing circle to tie the score at 17:45 of the first.

The Mallards next play at home Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Indy Fuel. The Mallards will welcome the Stanley Cup to Saturday's game. Fans will the chance to view and take photos with hockey's ultimate prize throughout that contest.
