Mavs Roll Blaze in Homestand Finale, 10-3

July 30, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

The High Desert Mavericks continued their assault on Bakersfield Blaze pitching, scoring half a dozen runs early, and holding off a middle-inning Blaze rally for an eventual 10-3 win at Sam Lynn Ballpark on Wednesday night.

In a rare turn, Dan Altavilla (L, 4-9) struggled, as the Blaze starter worked a scoreless 1st before allowing six runs on a pivotal 2nd inning.

The Blaze bullpen was forced into heavy duty, with Rafael Pineda giving up one run in 3.1 strong innings and Will Mathis following with three scoreless frames.

Meanwhile, the Blaze began to show some life in the middle frames. Down 7-0 in the 5th against Reed Garrett (W, 4-2), Austin Wilson and Chantz Mack each singled, setting the table for a Nelson Ward RBI double and the Blaze got on the board. Rayder Ascanio's groundout plated a second run, and one out later, Carlton Tanabe bounced a single into left to score a third run in the inning.

Unfortunately, the Blaze would climb no closer. High Desert added three in the 9th off Nick Valenza, and three Mavs relievers combined to blank the Blaze over the final 3.2 innings.

The loss eliminated Bakersfield's chance at a winning homestand, going 3-4 against San Jose and High Desert, and the club now heads on the road for seven games against the Southern Division, beginning with four in Inland and ending with three in Lancaster.

There's a fantastic reason to tune into the Blaze broadcast on Thursday night, too, as big leaguer Jered Weaver will make a rehab start for Inland Empire, and the Blaze and Tyler Pike have a chance to collect a win against a bonafide MLB stud. Dan Besbris will have the call at BakersfieldBlaze.com and TuneIn Radio with pregame show five minutes before a 7:05pm first pitch.
