Mavericks Sign Unice and Former Mav Tochkin

August 7, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) - Kansas City Mavericks News Release

Independence, Missouri - Aug. 7, 2014 -- The Missouri Mavericks announced Thursday afternoon that they have signed goaltender, Josh Unice, and former Mav, right wing, Kellan Tochkin to standard player contracts for the 2014-15 season.

"We are looking forward to seeing Tochkin back in action and welcoming Unice," said Brent Thiessen, Missouri Mavericks President & General Manager. "As everyone knows, we have always had solid goaltenders between the posts, and we expect nothing less this season."

Josh Unice, 25, Unice was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has gone on to play five seasons at the University of Western Ontario, making his professional debut in 4 games last year with the Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL). The 6'0", 180lb net minder hails from Holland, OH.

"Josh is a goaltender coming straight out of university with stats that speak for themselves," said Richard Matvichuk, Missouri Mavericks Head Coach & Director of Hockey Operations. "He played a couple games in the ECHL last year, and after talking with him I know he's ready to make that jump to the next level. I'm confident we can turn him into a great professional goalie."

Right wing, Kellan Tochkin, is no stranger to the Mavs' lineup. Tochkin played 56 games with Missouri during 2012-13 for his first professional season, scoring 15 goals and 29 assists for the Mavs. Tochkin was the Mavericks' leading goal-scorer in their 2013 playoff run.

"Tochkin is a proven player at the AA level, and he's really matured a lot over the last two years," said Matvichuk. "He's a proven playoff player; he showed that against the Allen Americans in 2013. We're very excited to have him on the roster with what he brings to the team offensively. He's been a big name in this community before and I'm sure everyone will be very excited to have him back."

The talented forward was originally signed as a free agent by the Vancouver Canucks (NHL) in 2009, the 23 year old, Abbotsford, BC native, was most recently obtained by the Carolina Hurricanes (NHL) from Vancouver in September 2013 as part of a multi-player trade. Tochkin played his 2013-14 season split between the Florida Everblades (ECHL) and the Evansville Icemen (ECHL).

The 2014-15 Central Hockey League season will begin on October 24, 2014. Missouri Mavericks season tickets are on sale now. Visit or call 816-252-7825 for more information.
