INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks announced Monday the Central Hockey League (CHL) team has signed forward Colt King for the 2012-13 season. He is the first player to sign with the Mavericks for the upcoming season.

King, 29 (3/4/83), is entering his ninth professional season and fifth in the Central Hockey League. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound forward was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in the fourth round (#130 overall) of the 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft. In total, he has played in 481 pro games in five different leagues and has accounted for 343 points (160-183343) and 1,419 penalty minutes.

"Colt is a difference maker on the ice," said Mavericks' head coach Scott Hillman. "His combination of skill and toughness, and his combination of point production and physical presence on the ice is matched by very few players in the Central Hockey League. We could not be more pleased than to add Colt to our roster as we try to continue to climb to the top of the CHL. We were close last season. We did not get there. Colt King can help us get there."

King spent last season with the Sheffield Steelers in England where he racked up 52 points (27-2552) and 199 penalty minutes in 61 games played. Prior to playing for Sheffield, the Thunder Bay, Ontario native played the previous four seasons in the CHL with the Rocky Mountain Rage and Rapid City Rush and was named the league's best power forward in three of those seasons. He won the Presidents' Cup with the Rush in 2010.

The Thunder Bay, Ontario native started his pro career in the ECHL with the Augusta Lynx in 2004-05 and played his first two full seasons in the ECHL. In his third season, King went to Port Huron and the UHL where he had the first of four seasons in which he scored 20 or more goals. Overall, he has four seasons of 20-plus goals, four seasons of 40-plus points including a career high of 68 points with the Rush in 2008-09. King has eclipsed 100 penalty minutes in all eight of his pro seasons including a career-high of 201 in 2006-07 with Port Huron.

Prior to turning pro, King played with six different teams in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) over the course of five seasons.
