Mavericks Gun Down Ports in Extra Innings 3-2

July 14, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

STOCKTON, Calif- In a three game series that has been all about pitching, the ten-inning finale seemed the perfect consummation.

The High Desert Mavericks pitching staff combined to retire the last 19 batters they faced, as they held on for a 3-2, extra inning victory over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. With the win, the Mavs avoided the sweep and kept themselves in a tie atop the Cal League South Division with the Lancaster Storm.

Early on, it looked like the Sons of Steverson were on their way to Sweepsville, as Nick Blasi led off in the bottom of the first with a solo home run off starter Danny Christensen. It was the second time in the series that Blasi has started things with a homer in the first for Stockton. John McCurdy added a solo blast of his own in the second, making it 2-0 Ports through two.

After the early jitters, Christensen really honed in for High Desert, going seven full innings and allowing just the two runs on three hits while striking out six.

Christensen received the no-decision as he left in a tie ballgame. High Desert scored their first two off Ports starter Kenny Durost. They cut the 2-0 deficit in half with an RBI single from Mike Stodolka in the third, and tied it up on an RBI single from Juan Sanreiso in the fifth. Durost got a no-decision as he went four-plus innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three.

With the score deadlocked, the pitching took control for both sides. Christensen, Patrick Hicklen (1-6) and Gilbert de la Vara (SV, 1) combined to pitch six perfect innings to end the ballgame. On the Ports side, Trent Peterson and Scot Drucker (7-6) held down the fort until the tenth, when Drucker allowed the go-ahead run on a sac fly to Tommy Duenas, bringing home Stodolka who doubled to start the inning. Stodolka went 4-for-4 on the night and reached base all five times he came to the plate.

The Ports end their nine game homestand with a record of 6-3, and won all three series vs. Modesto, San Jose and High Desert. Stockton will now embark on a nine game road trip that will take them to San Jose, Rancho Cucamonga and High Desert. They'll begin a three game set at San Jose Municipal Stadium on Friday night. Right-hander Ryan Webb (5-6, 5.35) will toe the rubber for the Ports, opposed by lefty Jesus Reina (5-4, 5.96 ERA). First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
