Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks could not match the offensive drive of the Arizona Sundogs on Sunday night at the Independence Events Center.
The Sundogs carried the momentum of the game early on, crushing the Mavericks net with shot after shot on goal. Missouri goaltender Shane Owen held strong between the pipes for the Mavs through the first 20 minutes of play and neither team managed to put a point on the board in the opening period.
Turnovers were the Mavericks' demise on Sunday night, and Arizona drew first blood when given the opportunity with a goal by Paul McIlveen only 1:39 into the second period. Trailing for a majority of the period, the Mavericks finally notched the equalizer on the power play. Andrew Courtney expanded his goal streak with the tally, assisted by Mike Ramsay and Sebastien Thinel to make the scoreboard read 1-1 at the end of the second period.
Kevin Baker wasted no time at the top of the third period giving his team back the lead over the Mavericks, scoring 1 minute and 19 seconds into the period to take a 2-1 advantage. Missouri once again caught up 2-2 with a lamp-lighter from Colt King. Trevor Kell and Matt Stephenson were credited with the helpers on King's first goal of the playoffs. Then Arizona threw up 2 goals within 2 minutes to rise up 4-2 over Missouri via Shawn Limpright and Paul McIlveen.

Tyler Currier scored the final point for the Mavericks with 2:26 left in the game, assisted by Colt King and Trevor Kell. Currier's goal gave the Mavs a fighting chance to force overtime, but Arizona turned up the pressure and prevented the goaltender Shane Owen from leaving the ice for the extra attacker until the final 20 seconds of the game.
It was too little too late for Missouri who skated away from the ice with a 4-3 regulation loss to the Arizona Sundog in Game 2 of the opening round of the 2014 Central Hockey League Playoffs.
The Mavericks continue their best-of-seven series against the Sundogs on Wednesday, April 9th at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, AZ at 8:35pm (CT).
