Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - Missouri Mavericks' President and General Manager Brent Thiessen announced Thursday the Central Hockey League (CHL) team has extended Head Coach Scott Hillman's contract for one season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"We are excited to announce Scott is returning for his third season behind the Mavericks' bench," said Thiessen. "Scott has led this team to two straight playoff berths and the team has continually improved through the first two years. We are confident in his ability to bring a cup home to the best fans in the CHL. He has also represented our franchise in many off-ice events, and we are pleased with his ability to help grow our brand."
Hillman, 37, enters his third season with the Mavericks in 2011-12. He has led the Mavericks to playoff berths in each of the first two seasons, and the team has reached the conference semi-finals in both seasons. Hillman has a 68-50-12 overall record in the regular season, and most recently, the Mavericks finished the 2010-11 season with a 37-23-6 record, just four points below first place.
"My family and I are so happy to be part of such an incredible organization and we could not be happier with calling Kansas City home," said Hillman. "We feel that we really have something special here with the Mavericks, so the decision to continue trying to bring a championship to Independence was an easy one. I look forward to continuing to work hard for our great fans to put an exciting product on the ice of the IEC. I wish to thank our ownership group and President Brent Thiessen for this great opportunity to remain with a premier organization in professional hockey."
Under Hillman's guidance, the Mavericks finished with the best defense in the CHL during the 2010-11 season allowing a league-low 2.62 goals per game. The Mavericks penalty kill unit was also among the league leaders finishing in second place with an 84.9 kill percentage.
Prior to joining the Mavericks, Hillman captured back-to-back regular season and playoff titles as the head coach with the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). During Hillman's two seasons with the Ice Bears, his team compiled a record of 67-32-13 (.660), and he was named the SPHL Coach of the Year in 2008-09.
Hillman had a stellar nine-season professional playing career, including his final eight seasons with the CHL's Odessa Jackalopes. The offensive defenseman was a four-time CHL All-Star, and at the time of his retirement, he was the Jackalopes' all-time leader in games played (446), and assists (260). He finished his career as the second leading scorer in club history with 326 points, and ranks among the top scoring defenseman in CHL history.
The 2001-02 CHL Man of the Year graduated from the University of Windsor with a bachelor's degree in human kinetics in 1999. He later received a Master of Science in kinesiology from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in 2002, compiling a 4.0 grade point average.
The LaSalle, Ontario native is married to wife Dalyn and the couple has two sons; Corbin and Guhnar.
The Mavericks will begin their third season in the Central Hockey League in October 2011. Season tickets are on sale now by calling (816) 252-7825 or visiting www.MissouriMavericks.com .
