Lancaster JetHawks News Release

(LANCASTER, CA) - If the Lancaster Jethawks come up short in their quest for the 2009 playoffs, the number one culprit for that shortcoming will be easy to identify. The High Desert Mavericks once again came from behind to beat the JetHawks in a critical series-opening ballgame in Adelanto. The JetHawks had played a great game until the eighth inning, and held a lead until the Mavericks scored five in that inning to break open the game and win 10-6.

After Carlos Peguero had given the Mavericks a lead on a two-run homer in the first inning, the JetHawks answered with a pair of sacrifice flies in the second to tie the game. In the third, they took their first lead on a Koby Clemens RBI single. They extended their advantage in the fourth on a solo home run off the bat of Marcos Cabral.

After the Mavericks cut the lead back to one on Peguero's second home run of the game in the fourth inning, Lancaster stretched it back to three on Ebert Rosario's two-run home run. It would remain 6-3 until the sixth inning, when the Mavericks got two runs. Again, Peguero was in the middle of the assault. He tripled in Jamie McOwen and scored on Alex Liddi's single to right field. The JetHawks got out of the inning on a double play when Marcos Cabral caught a line drive and threw to third behind Liddi.

Peguero started the deciding rally in the eighth as well, doubling to lead off the inning. Liddi walked and Joe Dunigan sacrificed them both over. After a Travis Scott sacrifice fly, Leury Bonilla hit a critical two-run home run to left field on the first pitch from Jack Tilghman. They tacked on two more runs and went to the ninth ahead 10-5.

Lancaster loaded the bases in the ninth but Steven Richard escaped the jam and the Mavericks held on for the victory. The two teams continue their series tomorrow night in Adelanto at 7:05 PM. The radio broadcast can be heard live on Magic 1340 AM and online at www.JetHawks.com beginning at 6:50 PM.
